401(k)-Type Plans, Participants Grow at Slower Pace
Growth in the number of 401(k)-type plans and the number of participants in those plans, which increased sharply in the 1990s, has slowed in recent years, according to a study released last month by the nonpartisan Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI). The study also shows that ownership and assets in both 401(k)-type plans and individual retirement accounts (IRAs) have risen, that the growth of IRA assets is due to rollovers from other tax-qualified retirement plans, and that most new IRA contributions are going into tax-free-on-withdrawal (nondeductible) Roth IRAs.

New Survey Examines Employers Retirement and Financial Planning Offerings
Retirement and Financial Planning Programs, a new survey by the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, looks at the types and formats of retirement and financial planning programs that employers offer to their employees. It also addresses the topics covered by formal retirement planning programs, and the programs availability and eligibility requirements.

Inflation Ranks as Today’s Top Retirement Concern
From the high price of milk and eggs to the unprecedented cost of gas, inflation is affecting every American. Among the largest groups affected are the 78 million baby boomers inching ever closer to retirement and current retirees who are experiencing soaring costs in a volatile economy. According to a new report, pre-retirees and retirees are worrying about keeping the value of their assets up with inflation as well as having enough money to pay for long-term care, paying for adequate healthcare and the challenges of maintaining a reasonable standard of living after the loss of a spouse -- all of which are also impacted by inflation.
